Who are we?
Owned by Kat and Olivia, a queer couple based in Central Pennsylvania, we both have a passion for knowledge and literature, with the both of us wanting to own a bookstore since we were children. Now married, we are trying to make our dream come true!
Why books? What can they provide to us?
Why not books? We believe that reading books gives you the knowledge and power to be able to command your own destiny, cheesy, I know.
Reading books with the right mindset can provide a deeper understanding of social and economic issues and can encourage critical thinking about the status quo. This philosophy emphasizes the importance of collective action and communal well-being, rather than individualism and personal gain.
When reading books with this mindset, we can analyze how societal structures and power dynamics affect individuals and communities. This can help us recognize and challenge inequality and oppression, and work towards creating a more just and equitable society.
Moreover, reading books with this perspective in mind can broaden our understanding of history, economics, and politics. It can help us explore alternative models of governance and economic organization that prioritize the needs of the many over the few.
Overall, reading books with this mindset can be a valuable tool for developing a critical consciousness and engaging with the world around us in a more empathetic and equitable way.
Oh no, you guys sound like a bunch of commies!
That's right! Not only are we a queer-owned, woman-owned bookstore, we also teach the concepts of socialism and class-consciousness. We sell many books on leftist and anti-racist theory however, for those who don't know what I am talking about, here is a brief summary!
Socialism is an economic and political system that emphasizes the collective ownership and control of resources and production, as opposed to private ownership by individuals or corporations. The goal of socialism is to create a more equal and just society, where everyone has access to basic needs like healthcare, education, and housing.
In a socialist society, resources and wealth are distributed according to need rather than profit, and decisions about how to use these resources are made democratically, with the goal of benefiting society as a whole. This means that everyone has an equal say in how resources are used and everyone has access to the same opportunities.
Class consciousness is the awareness of the social and economic class to which one belongs, and the recognition of the shared interests and struggles of others in that class. Class consciousness is important in a capitalist society because it helps people understand how their social and economic position is determined by their relationship to the means of production, such as their ownership of property or their position in the workforce.
In a socialist society, class consciousness is important because it helps people understand that their interests are aligned with the interests of the broader working class. This can help build solidarity and collective action to challenge the power structures that maintain inequality and exploitation.
Overall, socialism and class consciousness are about creating a more equal and just society, where resources and wealth are distributed according to need, and people are empowered to make decisions democratically.
